Get Your Game Face On

I recently finished up some time in an acting school.  During one of my first classes, the teacher sat down, looked everyone in the eye and said, “Why do people want to be actors?”  Immediately I thought to myself, “Most people in here will probably say something like they want to be famous or make lots of money.”  Personally, I was there for fun and a chance to learn something new.

What happened next shocked me.

Students began to say things like, “I want to change the way people think”, “I want to influence the way people view the world”, “I want to bring a new perspective”, and “I want to affect society”.

In a recent interview with Barbara Walters, Lady Gaga was asked about her influence with the younger generation. Barbara asked her what kind of impact she would like to leave with them. Her answer was literally, “I want to liberate them.” She went on to speak about wanting to set them free to be themselves and “make their own space in the world”.

I have been working in the church for many years now and must admit, I had become a little naïve in the ways of the world. These are not Christian people, nor do most of them consider themselves “religious” in any way. As they were speaking these answers out, a reality began to hit me. We as Christians, are not the only ones looking for ways to influence society.

When the disciples asked Jesus how they should pray, He told them,

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
(Matthew 6:9-10)

When I read this, I hear an open invitation to partner with Jesus. His timing and His ways are perfect. And He always has a plan. When we ask Him for divine strategy, He is faithful to give it to us. If we will watch our Heavenly Father and move when He moves, speak when He speaks; He will help us walk out our destiny. We are a generation that is heavily influenced by the idea of independence and individualism. While both of these are to be desired, our craving for true freedom leads us into an extreme of these two things. Like a pendulum, we can swing too far into independence and not allow any outside help from mothers and fathers, walk in rebellion, or show no care or concern for those around us. Swinging too far into individualism could leave us disconnected from family and relationship and from the people we are called to love.

But if we could deepen our intimacy with Jesus,
if we could move with Him and learn His heart for this world,
we could be unstoppable!

To love with His love and to see with His eyes, to walk within the parameters of His divine Word…..that leads us into a freedom like no other. He alone can answer that cry in our hearts for freedom and He wants to do it in every heart. We weren’t designed to do it alone. God not only promises to be with us always, but also refers to us as one body-the Body of Christ. Part of His excellent plan is for us to be partnered with each other.

The condition of this world should only inspire us to get our game face on! We must understand that we are not the only ones out there who want to influence hearts and minds. We must “seek first His Kingdom… and everything else will be added” unto us (Matthew 6:33). He has a plan.

Are you ready to seek it out and change the world?
